Lewis who will perform with his trio July 9 as part of A Fort Collins Jazz Experience has been writing music since he was in his 20s but it wasn’t until a few years ago that the 74-year-old jazz pianist began working on a slightly grander scale. In between touring recording – Lewis has completed more than 80 albums in his career – and hosting his weekly syndicated radio program he now composes large-scale symphonic works including a 2007 piece for Chicago’s Ravinia Festival featuring the Joffrey Ballet.

Though string bands played a role in the early years of jazz and put Europe on the swing map in the 1930s with the Gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli for most of the music’s history anyone wielding a bow took a far back seat to horn players. These days however some of the most exciting and innovative jazz musicians play strings and the emergence of Mads Tolling on the Bay Area scene is hardly an anomaly. Born and raised in Denmark the 28-year-old violinist immersed himself in the music of the post-bop masters as a teenager in Copenhagen after winning numerous honors for his mastery of classical music. “When I was about 17 years old I started transcribing solos by artists like Chick Corea Miles Davis John Coltrane like crazy getting their vocabulary down” says Tolling who makes his South Bay debut as a bandleader on Tuesday at Santana Row in the Flavors of Jazz series presented by San Jose Jazz. “I started playing at jazz clubs too sitting it at all the jam sessions around the city.
Jazz plans for St Albans pub refused

Landlords of the Goat Inn applied to St Albans District Council to bring back the tradition of jazz music which apparently used to be a popular attraction in the past. The Sopwell Lane pub currently plays live music from Monday to Friday but applicant Kate xford wanted to introduce the entertainment on Sundays. The application which was rejected by licensing officers at the district council stated: ?The playing of live jazz music on Sunday afternoons was a tradition for many years at the goat but was a tradition that was let slip by the previous owners. It was very popular both with the St Albans community and the surrounding areas and it was only thought as a boost to the area and never a nuisance. ? As well as the music the pub also wanted to sell real ale in takeaway cartons.
