Rock fans however can take heart from another announcement Horowitz made from the stage: Elvis Costello with his recent band the Imposters were added to Jazz Aspen’s Labor Day Festival set for early September in Snowmass Village. Jazz Aspen followers could also take comfort in the knowledge that jazz music — or at least something firmly rooted in jazz — could put a charge into the audience. Take Cullum who opened the festival Thursday night. Playing a style that combined lounge crooning Billy Joel-style piano rock contemporary r&b and jazz Cullum electrified the night. It is fair to say that Cullum himself was the attraction; a decent singer and solid keyboardist he was described by most as above all a great showman. But his sense of showmanship relies not so much on flashy gimmicks but on charisma and an ability to connect with the audience.

The San Francisco Weekly wrote “Mixing the legendary sounds of Fela Kuti with some tricks gleaned from James Brown and P-Funk Sila and company create a dancefloor-ready throb guaranteed to move you. The band?s current lineup consists of tenor saxophonist David Boyce (a founder of Afro-futurist jazz ensemble the Broun Fellinis) bassist Wendell Rand guitarists Ken House and David James drummer Bennie Murray trumpeter Mike Pitre trombonist Andre Webb and master African percussionists Karamba Kouyate (from Guinea) and Samba Guisse (from Senegal). In keeping with his mission to combine music with humanitarian efforts Sila has for the past four years co-produced the Afrofunk Festival raising musical consciousness among audiences from Seattle to San Diego to raise much-needed funds for education medical and health services for East African children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Playing benefit shows Sila explains is his way ?to stay connected to other people to remember that it’s not only about us but community.

Standing in the shadows of the Washington Monument The Duke Ellington rchestra honored its founder with a performance of Ellington’s “New rleans Suite. ” Meantime across town at the Embassy of France the Festival’s Artistic Director Paquito D’ Rivera presented an evening with New rleans clarinetist composer and noted music historian Dr. The 5th Annual Duke Ellington Jazz Festival culminates with an all-star show at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts “Celebrating a Jazz Master: Ellis Marsalis. ” Joining the Marsalis family on closing night were pianist Dr. Billy Taylor drummer Herlin Riley bassist Eric Revis and crooner Harry Connick Jr.

The New rleans Jazz Fest extends beyond the daytime fairgrounds and every club and bar in the city hosts live jazz. “We're uptown it's almost midnight and the street is full of people. When people come to New rleans they know its okay to have a good time” says Gregory Davis one of the founders of the NLA-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Each night the Jazz Fest party pours out into the streets where revelers dance drink hard lemonade cold Abita beer and catch crawfish in their mouths.
