June Festival overcomes myriad obstacles for memorable event

“There’s an absolute limit for amplified sound” he said. Rock fans however can take heart from another announcement Horowitz made from the stage: Elvis Costello with his recent band the Imposters were added to Jazz Aspen’s Labor Day Festival set for early September in Snowmass Village. Jazz Aspen followers could also take comfort in the knowledge that jazz music — or at least something firmly rooted in jazz — could put a charge into the audience. Take Cullum who opened the festival Thursday night. Playing a style that combined lounge crooning Billy Joel-style piano rock contemporary r&b and jazz Cullum electrified the night. It is fair to say that Cullum himself was the attraction; a decent singer and solid keyboardist he was described by most as above all a great showman. But his sense of showmanship relies not so much on flashy gimmicks but on charisma and an ability to connect with the audience.

Music flowed everywhere even in the streets after the fest ended each evening. As we look forward to the 41st Annual Jazz and Heritage Festival let’s hope there is a continued acknowledgement of the jazz music which has shaped our cultural heritage introducing new generations to the majesty of America’s greatest contribution to the arts. It is nice to hear the local and national legends each year but one can only look forward to an ambitious leap into the unexpected for the main stage acts: perhaps a Norwegian jazz quartet the guitar improvisations of.

So the Realistic rchestra and Shotgun Wedding Quartet will be debuting new pieces by [composer] Adam Theis and others in the crew. And Brooklyn Circus — this clothing company that’s really tied into the urban soul and hip hop communities — has been hosting a party here on Thursdays upstairs that has been just jam packed. So we’re going to be doing a show on the first Thursday of every month going forward called the Beyond Jazz music series. The first one with Brian Leslie sold out in about two weeks. The first Thursday in July is going to feature soul singer Jaguar Wright with rapper Big Brooklyn Red backed by local group Bayonics. So yeah hard times call for trying to branch out and do different things. We’re kind of toying with the formula here.
