He is also currently working on a new commission for Monaco’s Ballet Russe’s Centennial Festival in December 2009. “Moran is like no other pianist at work” wrote jazz critic and writer Gary Giddins. His technical virtuosity is paired with a modern cutting-edge approach to jazz music. This is Moran’s first composition for dance. Both King and Moran have received countless awards and accolades for their work: King who founded Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet in 1982 was recently honored with the Jacob’s Pillow Creativity Award and a prestigious USA Fellowship. Moran also the recipient of a USA Fellowship was recognized as one of the “37 Under 36: America’s Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences” by Smithsonian magazine. The Heathcote couple Cindi and Brian have decided to open their doors to the kind of people who love nothing more than to jump into their favourite pants and mosey on down to the Nahoon Reef for a night of laid-back dance music of which jazz and and salsa will prevail. It is not an “over 30s” gig and there is no cover charge. It is a spot for jazz lovers and upmarket people who love the culture of dancing in a city that does not cater for them. The Heathcotes know that East London is clogged with “mature” people who have nowhere to go on the weekends and would jump at a chance to socialise in a pleasant and artistic environment. Last Sunday afternoon the former Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Lindiwe Hendricks and husband Andrew and company were happily nodding their heads and stomping their feet to the beat provided by Urban Connection in the background.
