Jazz music lovers can get cosy at Nahoon Reef
Dispatch nline
The Heathcote couple Cindi and Brian have decided to open their doors to the kind of people who love nothing more than to jump into their favourite pants and mosey on down to the Nahoon Reef for a night of laid-back dance music of which jazz and and salsa will prevail. It is not an “over 30s” gig and there is no cover charge. It is a spot for jazz lovers and upmarket people who love the culture of dancing in a city that does not cater for them. The Heathcotes know that East London is clogged with “mature” people who have nowhere to go on the weekends and would jump at a chance to socialise in a pleasant and artistic environment. Last Sunday afternoon the former Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Lindiwe Hendricks and husband Andrew and company were happily nodding their heads and stomping their feet to the beat provided by Urban Connection in the background.

With the relation to Getz solidified Johansson was fortunate enough to be included on concerts in Stockholm and Copenhagen as a part of Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) in Europe shows and notably was the first European to be a part of this organization. The Stan Getz Quartet would include scar Peterson Trio bandmates Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums) with Johansson holding down the piano chair. Gothenburg was becoming less fertile ground for jazz music towards the later 1950s due in part to the influence of rock music on local establishments. Johansson found an outlet through a record company devoted initially to documenting the ?spex? productions at Chalmers. Megafon records released a series of three EP?s by Johansson the first of which was titled Mäster Johansgatan 12 (Master Johan?s Street No. 12) which won Johansson a Golden Disc award from rkester Journalen in 1960. This would be the second time his involvement resulted in this award but more were still to come.

All About Jazz
To summarize briefly the development of Choro in Brazil parallels the evolution of jazz in America in that a native music gradually merged with European music producing something new. European trio dance forms and harmonies such as the chord patterns of the polka and minuet were mixed with Afro-Brazilian dances and syncopated rhythms. The result is an intriguing and intoxicating music that seduces both classical and jazz music lovers due to its mix of European formality and jazz freedom along with the unique syncopated rhythms of Brazil. As with jazz the compositions are learned and memorized by the players so that creative improvisation which takes place among all the players soloists and accompanists alike can occur during rodas (jam sessions) or saraus (soirées). Thus Choro as a music cannot be merely learned but must be lived. Boukas repeatedly emphasized the amount of preparation and rehearsal that went into this concert. In return the students taking their cue from Boukas and obviously loving the music and gave their all.
