The wistful melancholy ambiance in both Arab and traditional Andalusian music clearly lends itself to the kind of cool jazz of Miles Davis. Each note has a release and tension value. And once you play that note you have to be committed to it. Q: How do you instruct students with a textbook on jazz music?A: Jazz is an oral tradition. So to understand the history of jazz you have to hear it to understand it. You can?t learn it from a book. You can read it to get an idea of the sound. The book will also help you to approach the music philosophically.

In 2002 Wayman reached the top of his new profession earning the honor of Bassist of the Year at the National Smooth Jazz Awards. To Tulsans he was our Wayman Tisdale. But he was known around the world for his annual jazz cruise and for his spirit and love that showed through his music. Some believe Wayman will be larger now than he was in life. “There are a lot of people in the audience who have followed my career and friends from high school in Compton and neighboring schools” Rentie said. “We came through the traditional funk like the Blue Note and CTI records stuff that we were listening to on the radio back in the 1970s and 1980s. That was our kind of popular jazz music. ” Some of the audience also order drinks that are unusual for a jazz club such as coffee and sodas. “A lot of my audience has that church background” said Rentie “but at the same time they like to go out and have a good time and listen to good music. ” Amen!
