Ragtime Jazz Festival kicks off today on MSU campus

And this morning world renown music historian David A. Jensen is leading a special tour to highlight the role many of the machines and their companies played in the history of Ragtime and Jazz music. The tour kicks off this year’s Charles Templeton Ragtime Jazz Festival. David Jasen is a leading authority on and a well-known collector of books recordings piano rolls periodicals catalogues and sheet music dealing in all areas of American popular music. His extraordinary private collection has been prized alongside those of the Library of Congress the New York Public Library and the City University of New York. Jasen is serving as the Festival emcee for the third consecutive year.

This was the time of the Beatles and like groups. But I had been into the Motown sound as a teen and listening to Rawls was an easy transistion that introduced me to jazz. Rawls’ music though not strictly jazz and the more specifically jazz music for which I acquired an ear began to usher my change into adulthood. It spoke to me of a larger world a place where I could find a unique place relate to difficult cultures than one I knew to people who did not yet know me. In later years I would visit some jazz bars in the Pittsburgh area — downtown Pittsburgh East Liberty Verona Sharpsburg. Music — my music your music parents’s music friends music — plays an interesting part in our lives. I date my interest in the music of John Denver to my early years of my marriage.

” In a sense that approach has driven Firehouse 12 from the beginning. Lloyd had run a small studio in Park Slope Brooklyn before moving to New Haven originally to pursue a Ph. in music theory at Yale. He discovered the former firehouse which had long ago fallen into disrepair. The city was seeking proposals for the space; his more or less an outline for Firehouse 12 made the grade.
