Soul Beat Project also is called Yesanjok which translates as people (jok) who try to make a big mountain (san) with arts (ye). The group draws on Korean traditions while adding more modern elements such as American-based jazz and improvisation. “Yesanjok is trying to expand people’s idea of what jazz is at least in Korea (and is) inclusive of other improvisational genres like Korean traditional music. This is happening all over East Asia the region of which Alaska is more or less a part – the North Pacific.

It’s called ‘No Filter’ because that’s the nickname we have for Hans. He doesn’t like to censor himself. Zenón who once considered studying engineering likes to use a mathematical approach to build a bridge between Latin and jazz music. n his 2005 album “Jíbaro” he focused on the medieval Spanish poem form called décima which is found in Latin American folk music and always uses 10 lines. For “Esta Plena” he wrote rhythms harmonies and melodies based on the number three the number of pleneros that accompanied his jazz quartet. “Even though there is randomness and improvisation in my music I want to have some concrete idea that I can hold onto” said Zenón. But while his method may seem coldly systematic Zenón’s tribute to the plena reflects the warmth and love he has for traditional culture.

In 1999 Lear and Gaba became co-owners of Concord Records which was founded as a small jazz label in Concord Calif. Now based in Beverly Hills and called the Concord Music Group it has grown to encompass many genres of music including jazz pop rock Latin and classical. The company’s growth is a reflection of Gaba’s vision Lear said. “In a sense Hal was the growth of Concord: It was his bliss his passion” he said. “If you wanted to hear Sinatra any time day or night you walked into his office. He was always playing great music.
