Gismonti began piano lessons at the age of six and spent more than 15 years studying classical music eventually going to Europe to study with famous teachers Nadia Boulenger and Jacques Barraqué. After returning to Brazil he sojourned several years in the northern part of the country among the Xingu people absorbing their culture and music. This experience enabled him to create a never-before-heard mixture of pre-20th century Brazilian ethnic musics such as the maracatu maxixe baião and toada with modern classical music in a jazz-like setting.
