This ability to “create as you go” is essential for any musician wishing to play jazz. “Jazz in the beginning was very simple” said Tony Gulizia who leads the educational program for the Vail Jazz Foundation. “In this lesson we travel through history from ragtime to modern jazz and examine how the music has become much more complex. Jazz is unique because jazz musicians can carve their own path through the music expressing their own musical voice using improvisation.

The jazz night is an annual event for local public schools renamed in 2007 in commemoration of the late Colton High School band director. Eight high school bands the WSU Jazz Big Band and VJAZZ vocal jazz ensemble performed during a three-hour period. For saxophonist Greg Yasinitsky WSU coordinator of jazz studies the event was a way for WSU to reach out to local music programs. “I thought it would be nice for them to come to campus” he said. The event hosted by the South Eastern Washington Educational Music rganization began with performances from three high school vocal jazz ensembles. The tunes varied from the 1962 latin jazz classic “The Girl from Ipanema” to a special rendition of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby. ” The WSU VJAZZ vocal jazz ensemble directed by Kathleen Hollingsworth followed with three songs including the tune “Love Makes the World Go Round” which kept the crowd entertained.

The band was taken over by Bob Sampson until three years ago when some of the founding members of the Georgia Straight Jazz Society associated themselves with the band?s activities. This resulted in engaging Greg Bush as conductor and led to the band?s rejuvenation. McGlashan will attend Thursday?s performance by special invitation and receive an award from a surprise guest in recognition of his contribution to band and jazz music in the region. “Mosquito Boat” had its world premiere in September at Graham’s 318 chocolate fondue bar in downtown Geneva. “ne day we were playing at Graham’s during Festival of the Vine when Ethan asked ‘Do you want to play this song I wrote?’” Bielenberg recalled. “He gave us the music and we just started playing it. That would be hard to do with some styles but you can do it with jazz because it’s so improvisational. “”I wasn’t surprised that it won” Watson added. “Kids (who enter the IMEA’s All-State composition contest) try to write complicated hard-to-play pieces. I understand why the judges were looking for something more mellow like Ethan’s piece.
