Music: Zoe Rahman’s Bengali Jazz Fusion
Croydon Advertiser UK
“We were worried at what the reception would be but it’s been really good. “Especially when we’ve had Asian people in the audience they’ve been proud we’re doing music that doesn’t get played in that way. Croydon audiences will be able to hear the fusion of Bengali and jazz music themselves this week when Zoe and Idris Rahman come to Croydon Clocktower. The show features Zoe’s regular jazz trio partners drummer Gene Calderazzo and bassist li Hayhurst as well as other guest musicians. “I’ve played in Croydon Clocktower a couple of times before and I really loved the space – it’s a bit like playing in a library. “People don’t need any particular knowledge of jazz or Bengali music to enjoy the show because everyone has said how accessible it is. “That’s what I really love about jazz – it’s a totally different experience when you hear it live and something anyone can appreciate.

Craig Taborn a keyboardist of exploratory temperament is one of a handful of American musicians bringing steady refinement to the field. Five years ago he released “Junk Magic” (Thirsty Ear) a smart effort at cross-pollination that now sounds only slightly dated. Since then working mainly as a featured sideman he has upgraded his arsenal and sharpened his attack. n Tuesday night Mr.
