ver the past 18 years the ensemble has performed a program of original compositions mostly by Elektra in the New York City area and in Scandinavia. With both an eye toward tradition and a flair for the new Ensemble Elektra brings a fresh perspective to jazz music blending the modern beat of New York life with its leader’s multi-ethnic musical roots. Elektra spoke to The Greek News about her music and how it relates to her life as a Greek who has lived outside of Greece and as a musician. “The goal of my music is to reconcile the jazz and rock music of western culture with the Greek modes “Dhromoi” and Avant-garde of the seventies in order to develop a completely new sound – bluesy contemporary and ethnic at times. The compositions are inspired by jazz and rock with musical elements derived from my ethnic roots featuring odd-rhythmic bass lines and Greek dance rhythm patterns jazz and avant-garde improvisations Arabic tonalities and modulations rock and Caribbean idioms. ”There is enormous variety in her inspiration: regional Greek folk music the rembetiko form jazz and ethnic music from around the world as well as from Bartok Stravinski Lutoslawski and Prokofiev and others says Elektra whose work “represents who she is” in her words and that identity can seem complex as her Greek father Greek – Egyptian mother and older brother were Greek refugees in Poland.

McBride making the same pitch to Sirius XM Radio which has agreed to broadcast an edited version of the series. But judging by his first of two sets Mr. McBride will be leaning more on the precedent of Ms. McPartland in her celebrated public radio show “Piano Jazz” than on either of the other two touchstones. (His ratio of interview to performance also invites comparison to “Spectacle”.

But when will the label return the favor? It could start by releasing those great jazz piano albums Hammond produced for Columbia such as Friedrich Gulda’s Ineffable (I haven’t even seen a copy in 30 years) Adam Makowicz’s Adam and (yes!) the Denny Zeitlin trio dates. Zeitlin’s leader debut Cathexis from 1964 is one of the great jazz albums of the era and is only available now because a small firm has been able to license the music. The corporate honchos who “own” this “intellectual property” (what a quaint phrase) couldn’t care less about making classic jazz music available. I still remember hearing this track on the radio in the mid-1970s when I was a teenager?I immediately drove to a record store to buy a copy. Ah the LP was already out-of-print and a collector’s item. I eventually found Cathexis and all of Zeitlin’s other Columbia LPs although it took several years of hunting and gathering to collect a complete set. This scintillating track is a good place to start in appreciating the artistry of Dr.

I get e-mail messages from people all the time that go beyond the music: ‘Thank you for going out there and doing this for making this K. ‘ ” Mahanthappa says that South Asians living in America are one people not divided by the border conflicts or religious strife that have been so much a part of news from abroad. “We’re here we’re part of the American landscape and we just happen to be playing jazz or improvised music” Mahanthappa says. The music they’re creating is another example of how open to fresh ideas American culture can be. © Copyright 2008 NPR. publicbroadcasting.
