Sometimes what makes jazz and what doesn’t can be that difficult. But well here is yet again another jazz night. The Sizzling Jazz Safari scheduled for this Friday at Ange Mystique Car Park is a culmination of months of efforts to promote jazz music in Uganda. The monthly Jazz Evenings in Ange Mystique and the weekly radio show Jazz Evenings on Radio One are at the forefront of this effort. “We intend to make this event affordable for all Jazz lovers and all those who wish to get into this impeccable art form” Ange Mystique’s Tshaka Mayanja said. “At this moment in time since Jazz music is in its infancy here in Uganda we are putting emphasis on two Jazz sub genres; Smooth Jazz and Nu Jazz.

Although the city still maintains its image for being a musical mecca it has been facing a paradox between the music industry and its music. The music industry has been having a hard time matching with the overabundance of musical talent in New Orleans. “There has not been much of an industry to go along with all of our music. The challenge has been to develop an industry to go along with all of the creative talent so that our artists have an easier time sustaining themselves their livelihoods and earning a living from their craft” said Scott Aiges who is the director of programs marketing and communications for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation.

This will be the 40th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and will showcase some of the best names in the music business. The festival is scheduled to take place over two weekends starting on April 24th-26 and ending on the weekend of April 30-May 3 in 2009. Ticket have gone on sale for the festival now which can be purchased as single weekends or for the entire festival if you are a really big fan of jazz music. The New Orleans Jazz Festival will feature some huge names in the music business including musical greats Wynton Marsalis James Taylor Earth Wind & Fire and Aretha Franklin just to name a few. The acts will differ for each weekend but it will be a big chance for any fan of music to really enjoy one of the best concerts of their lifetime.

“This concert was unlike anything I’ve seen while at Millikin but it was so interesting” sophomore Ryan Tierney said. “I feel like it was a cultural experience that most people aren’t exposed too enough. ” Jazz concertJazz music flooded the hall once again on Nov. 20 as the Fall Jazz Concert was presented in KFAC. This instrumental concert featured the members of Jazz Bands I and II. The Big Band style of music offered the audience an 18- piece ensemble. Music from the original jazz era and contemporary pieces were preformed during the concert.
