Although the city still maintains its image for being a musical mecca it has been facing a paradox between the music industry and its music. The music industry has been having a hard time matching with the overabundance of musical talent in New Orleans. “There has not been much of an industry to go along with all of our music. The challenge has been to develop an industry to go along with all of the creative talent so that our artists have an easier time sustaining themselves their livelihoods and earning a living from their craft” said Scott Aiges who is the director of programs marketing and communications for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation.

“We served beer and wine and the musicians came in. It took off really well but we were a little ahead of our time” he says adding that his dream is to open another jazz club down the line. 3) Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen the Barry SistersWhen a pair of black vaudevillians Johnnie and George sang this old Yiddish theater song at the Apollo Theater it caught the attention of Sammy Cahn who put it in the hands of the Andrews Sisters. Their English-language version of the song became the first true Yiddish crossover hit on the American pop charts. Their success inspired two sisters from the Bronx to change their name from Bagleman to Barry and start mixing Yiddish tunes with jazz and big-band swing. On their last album “Our Way” (1973) ? which our nonprofit record label has just reissued on CD ? the Barry Sisters not only performed Yiddish makeovers of “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” and “My Way” but also turned back the clock and reminded the world just how good “Bei Mir” sounds in Yiddish. 4) Fiddler on the Roof Medley the Temptations and5) Sabbath Prayer Joe QuijanoOnce we got knee deep in LP collecting and our garages and offices started filling up it was clear that we could do a whole spin-off book on music inspired by “Fiddler on the Roof. ” More than any cultural event in American Jewish life “Fiddler” transformed Jewishness (in the folksy guise of Eastern European shtetl romance) into universal American pop. Aside from the many loyal riffs on both the play and the film that kept the Jewish angles intact there were more than a few that moved Tevye to some new rooftops: the path-breaking Puerto Rican percussionist Joe Quijano did a whole “Fiddler on the Roof Goes Latin” album and Cannonball Adderley gave it a jazz remake.

During this time I discovered a few things that I was not expecting. First there are far more creative young jazz artists on the scene today than I expected. There is no shortage of new good jazz music. I hear it every day. The problem is getting that music out to the masses so they can hear it too. Second I have always believed there was nothing greater than the initial moment of discovery.

Since my father had a music store (Anderson Music Center aka Music Today) I also took guitar and drum lessons. I ended up playing a drum set through middle school and high school and played in my father’s big band. Q: Why did you decide to dedicate your life to jazz music?A: It was just a part of my soul. Jazz is a big part of my life but I also have a love for Latin pop and meditation music. I have written many original songs and seem to vary my style from whom I am writing with or for. Q: You have performed with some of the biggest names in jazz music. What was your most memorable performance?A: I really have a lot of great moments but the one that I would consider very special was when I played with legend jazz drummer Ed Thigpen.

One Christmas when I woke up there was a shiny black guitar under the Christmas tree” Perri said. As a teenager Perri listened to legendary rock bands from Led Zeppelin to the Grateful Dead. Perri says he got into Gypsy jazz music while a student at Berklee College of Music. One day Perri went to a record store. He saw a Django Reinhardt greatest hits album in a bargain bin for three bucks. Call it the investment of a lifetime. “At that point I was at a crossroad.
