The big difference is that instead of sitting at the back of the class where he was ignored as a child with dyslexia Mulcahy is now at the top of the class tutoring young musicians at University College Cork. He combines this work and his studies for his MA in jazz performance with his full-time tailoring job at Tucker Tailors on Washington Street in Cork (Tommy Tucker being the musician’s nickname). Granville is confident it is a good time to be an independent artist with a unique sound. “As times get tougher and situations change you’ve got to have something that’s different I think otherwise why buy it?” he asks. The Wellington musician says the best thing about jazz music is having the chance to improvise and producing his own record brought the same kind of freedom. “With my band I like to feature the people in the band and let them do what they do best” he says. One of those band members is Alex Nyman who has played alongside Granville for five years. While Granville is seen as a bit on the young side to be caught up in the jazz scene Nyman is an old hand and full of praise for the 30-year-old’s work. “He’s got some pretty challenging material there but it’s always material you can have a lot of fun with” says Nyman.
