Sacramento Bee – May 24, 2008
By Monday the event is expected to attract 70000 people from aging sequined flappers to youngsters getting their first taste of that toe-tapping smile-inducing Dixieland jazz. “I’m mostly spending money” Ohana said with a laugh as she walked through the cobbled streets of Old Sacramento carrying a large shopping bag filled with souvenir sweatshirts and blankets. While most people come for the music and the inevitable dancing others are attracted to the party atmosphere and the many opportunities for people-watching – a woman in a red sequined dress and fishnet stockings dancing with a parasol; a man in a straw hat and blue jeans tapping his toe and sipping a Bloody Mary; a woman wearing butterfly-shaped sunglasses munching nachos as she listens to a band. There were all kinds of people with all kinds of interests from all different age groups though the core audience is decidedly senior. In fact some of the flappers sported knee wraps and folks with canes were commonplace. You didn’t even have to be into jazz to be into the jubilee.
