Stanko’s regular working quartet — a first-time collaboration that worked out gracefully — and the music became more jagged more grooving and in many ways more American. But in fact it was all Polish. In addition to pieces by Mr. Stanko the group was performing music by the Polish film composer Krzysztof Komeda who died in 1969 and with whom Mr. Stanko used to play. Komeda is still best known for the soundtracks he wrote for.

By merging the sounds of his musical upbringing in Harlem and Kansas City he developed a unique brand of swinging blues that made audiences across the world want to dance. In early 1930s Kansas City Bennie Moten’s band was the toast of the town. But as Moten’s band was primed to break through to national attention the bandleader died suddenly in 1935. In the aftermath the atmosphere within the Moten band was not the same and Basie soon left to pursue his own vision. He landed his first gig as a bandleader at the Club Reno in Kansas City and quickly assembled the nucleus of his new group: walking bassist Walter Page drummer Jo Jones and Basie’s own boogie-influenced piano playing… Finally there was the World War II draft which stripped away some of his best musicians. Changing tastes recording strikes and television lay ahead for Count Basie. In the coming years he would need to develop new ways to keep his band a major force in American music. For those interested in world music jazz or folk there will be no shortage of fascinating intersections to be found at Jazz Club Reduta Popocafépetl Kampa Museum and other venues.
