Music won’t stop for departing jazz chief

AFTER three years at the helm Albert Dadon has resigned asartistic director of Melbourne Jazz just a week out from thisyear’s festival opening citing increasing pressure from businessand other creative interests. Fellow board member Michael Tortoni who also runs city jazzvenue Bennetts Lane has been appointed the artistic directordesignate for 2009 and beyond. “I’ve been planning for a while to retire it’s not somethingthat came at the last minute” said Dadon yesterday from the QueensRoad office of property developer and funds manager the UbertasGroup of which he is executive chairman. “I thought I was going to make my last festival my last one. Then I decided to do one more but knew I was stretchingmyself.

Big stars won’t outshine New Orleans talent at Jazz Fest
USA Today – Apr 22, 2008
“It’s a validation of the premise of the festival the heritage of jazz” he says. “You see the coming together of the African and European influences and the blues and gospel strains that fed into jazz. “We’re staying true to our mission and artistic structure. This festival doesn’t just put these things quirkily on display alongside indie rock bands that are doing every other fest… The big draws for Saturday’s simultaneous appearances by Billy Joel and Keyshia Cole likely won’t dent attendance at the blues tent’s idiosyncratic Ponderosa Stomp Revue which includes fancy-stepping Texas soul vet Roy Head (Treat Her Right). And while McGraw’s country tunes are sure to pull a huge crowd Sunday the gospel tent will no doubt house a sizable congregation for the Ninevah Baptist Church mass choir. “Jazz Fest has been unique in bringing traditional music to a wider audience” Davis says. “It’s not mainstream. People who pack the blues tent or never leave the gospel tent say ‘I can hear such-and-such a star anytime. ‘ It’s a phenomenon at Jazz Fest that’s out of proportion with the support these acts get in the marketplace. Yet a ripple effect has taken artists beyond Louisiana’s small pond.

Play two-day-old babies a sequence of notes in a simple order again and again – the “da da da DAA” at the start of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony say – and they show little brain response to the shift between the three repeats and the single note of a different pitch. Play the notes at random though and the brains show a flash of activity each time the new tone intrudes. This proves the babies are sensitive to the structure hidden within music rather than just to the appearance of a different sound. The Jazz Festival experiment will look for an ability to sense more sophisticated patterns. It will test the audience with sets of notes that may or may not follow standard rules of western composition (and do or do not generate a recognisable tune) and then measure how memorable or otherwise each sequence is. The results will be reported at the Science Festival. As the babies show some musical talents are inborn; but they can be modified too – which is why musicians need to practise so much and why Indian music sounds alien to the Western ear.

Restaurant fuses Asian cuisines together
ECU The East Carolinian – Apr 22, 2008
Nguyen’s restaurant is a place where visitors would want to dress to impress. Though there is not a dress code it is what some would call “fancy. ” With its dim lighting candles on the table and soothing jazz music streaming it is definitely a good place to have an intimate dinner date. Wasabi 88 is also different from other Asian restaurants in the area because its menu is not limited to one Asian country. And that’s what Nguyen was going for. “All in all I wouldn’t classify it as Japanese-Vietnamese or Thai. It’s a little bit of all so that you have a variety to choose from” he said.
