"He was wonderful to know and listen to and everything else. "Adrian Howell 35 of Toronto remembered Peterson as "a great jazz musician. ""I’m a fan of his music I’m a fan of jazz in general. His playing was technically brilliant" he said. Yuri Grinev 47 of Etobicoke was a little surprised at the length of the lineup when he arrived. tmpl –>When accordionist Marc Savoy comes to town he stays with Chris Strachwitz in his quiet Berkeley hills home. They’ve known each other about 45 years. Strachwitz was hunting authentic Cajun music in Eunice La. and had been directed to telephone Savoy who had been making accordions in those parts since 1960. tmpl –> Images… Strachwitz is also producing an as-yet untitled documentary about the New Lost City Ramblers the bluegrass revivalists who first brought the music to New York City in the ’50s a project he took over (“I got stuck with it” he said) under the auspices of the Arhoolie Foundation a nonprofit wing of his operation that is also digitizing Strachwitz’s collection of 78 RPM Mexican American records which is probably the most extensive collection in existence and making the music available through the UCLA folk music library. Strachwitz is also the subject of a documentary film-in-progress “No Mouse Music. ” The movie takes its title from Strachwitz’s pat phrase for any kind of music he deems useless – “Mouse music” a contraction of “Mickey Mouse music” which was the ’30s jazz musicians’ term of disdain for unbearably square bands. Strachwitz’s amiable irascibility makes him the perfect foil for documentary filmmakers. They build entire PBS TV series around characters like him. Around dinnertime the next day he arrives at Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage where the first Savoy Family show is going to take place. The Savoys awoke before four in the morning in Louisiana to make their flight out of Baton Rouge.

When rock was being born in the 1960s we jazz musicianstook it as a threat from a vulgar art form that was bound to bemore popular than our intelligent music. We were of courseright. Jazz has never recovered. While rock turned out to be more complicated than that Iwould continue to define Led Zeppelin as coarse. I realize that this is a minority opinion but their musichas always made my teeth ache… Jazz has never recovered.
