content-row clearfloat –> THE Adelaide International Guitar Festival is turning the spotlight on jazz with three of the biggest names in jazz guitar set to perform at Festival Theatre tonight. Acclaimed Austrian guitarist and composer Wolfgang Muthspiel was classically trained as a violinist before he turned to the guitar as a teenager. "I think I was trying to find a kind of music and voice to express myself at that age" he says. "I sort of had to give up the things that were expected of me which at that time was to become a violinist. " Muthspiel quickly moved from classical guitar into improvisation and jazz. He will share tonight’s bill with American Ralph Towner who he cites as one of his influences and British guitarist Martin Taylor. Although they will perform as solo acts Muthspiel and Towner toured Australia with Australian guitarist Slava Grigoryan two years ago… "We were three very different musicians from different generations but it was very rewarding to meet them" he says. "I’m looking forward to continuing the association. " Muthspiel has recorded with jazz greats such as Peter Erskine and Youssou N’Dour and is one of the few artists to have given a solo performance at the Vienna State pera. His album Bright Side was Mojo Magazine’s 2006 Jazz Album of the Year. Ralph Towner is the lead composer guitarist and keyboardist with world-renowned acoustic jazz ensemble regon. During the 1970s regon produced a number of influential recordings combining folk music Indian music and improvisation. Its 2000 CD regon in Moscow recorded with the Tchaikovsky Symphony rchestra received four Grammy nominations.
