The selection should appeal to a broad range of listeners as the songs of jazz legends such as Davis Ellington and John Coltrane will be featured alongside more contemporary material. Some of the new music that will be performed is courtesy of the International Association for Jazz Education a move made possible by Vadala who sends original music to the association so he can write reviews for its publication Jazz Education Journal.

Music Review | Concha Buika
New York Times – Oct 29, 2007
The sorrowful volatility of the old Spanish songs called coplas and of flamenco its pain and tragedy endured and defied suffused her music’s multilayered rhythms and harmonies. Buika (pronounced BWEE-kah) was born on the island Palma de Mallorca to parents from Equatorial Guinea. She soaked up flamenco jazz African music and soul as she grew up and she carries them all within her husky voice. She can make sweeping dynamic changes turning from tearful to desperate to furious in a phrase. She can sing the taut arabesques and unfurling improvisations of flamenco or glide through a pop melody or scat-sing with an exultant sense of swing. n her superb album “Mi Ni?ola” (Dro Atlantic) Buika shapes the songs into concise pop structures. nstage she expanded them for more drama and exploration.

The Definitive Art: Jazz
dailytoreador.com – Oct 29, 2007
But I have a solution: jazz. Just stay with me jazz antagonists. Did you know that jazz music is a true American art form? When I start losing faith in my common man especially with those who refuse to use signal lights when turning I think to myself “It’s K we started jazz” and I actually begin to feel a little better. Although jazz was created from blues music which was a result of oppression in my opinion it is the most definitive type of art around. Within majority types of music there are boundaries. There are formats time signatures and certain keys that one has to reside in. But then there is jazz… Just stay with me jazz antagonists. Did you know that jazz music is a true American art form? Musicians – who are all very familiar of those structured forms and knowledge – completely throw it out the window and begin to really feel what they hear.

Sharpsburg ironworks fall event serves a historical treat
Hagerstown Morning Herald – Oct 29, 2007
“Natoma Reed-Vargason said Sunday’s festival at Antietam Ironworks was the first of what will hopefully be an annual event. By early afternoon about 100 people had been there for the buffet historical literature and live music. Bob Sykes and Scott Silbert both of Sharpsburg played jazz music in a dining area while several people enjoyed the buffet. Reed-Vargason said donations were being collected for the Sharpsburg Historical Society. She said organizers hope to raise at least $300. The festival also was an opportunity to let the community know that Antietam Ironworks is available for parties receptions and other events. “It’s an opportunity for friends and family to come together” she said of the event.
