JD Souther: New kid in Town
Belfast Telegraph – Sep 28, 2007
However he is a man of many other talents including being a multi-instrumentalist a poet and an actor ? I wonder how many of his music fans know that he was also John Dunaway on television’s Thirtysomething or that he played a major role in the film My Girl 2? With a big band singer for a father and an opera singer for a grandmother Souther’s life was steeped in music from an early age. His first musical influence outside of family was the post bop jazz music of the late 1950s by artists like Miles Davis John Coltrane and especially Dave Brubeck. "I also loved Ray Charles and Sam Cooke but I knew I was never going to sound like them" admits Souther. "So it was a relief when I heard people like Buddy Holly Roy rbison Big Bopper Conway Twitty and Waylon Jennings who actually sounded like me and who were making a living singing even with that hard Texan accent. These guys all lived relatively close to me and because their songs were being played on the local radio were an unmissable influence". Having played various instruments including saxophone (he had wanted to be a jazz saxophonist) the talented musician ended up playing drums in a jazz band and didn’t start writing until much later.
