PEARSN: Taking a toll all over again
Rocky Mountain News – Sep 22, 2007
All three are powerful yet theyseem a bit disembodied because they’re tacked onto the end of existingepisodes rather than integrated. The War proves that even a necessary war can be brutal andinhumane. It’s full of Burns’ trademark touches: a camera that zooms inon still photos (color footage comes in the last few episodes)celebrities reading soldiers’ letters jazz music that runs the gamutfrom Benny Goodman to Norah Jones. Music critic’s new jazz bar an improvisational work in progress

Though DJs spinning electronica and dance music are the latest rage in bars and nightclubs the city has still managed to retain a cluster of jazz and blues parlours. A newcomer on the scene is Rebop Bar a place where only good jazz matters. n the corner of Samsen Road an old coffeehouse has been turned into a simple jazz bar. With pages ripped from Billboard magazine as wallpaper the place would look like any other hole-in-the-wall pub if it weren't for the huge framed pictures of such jazz legends as Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis.

This album like the debut CD also contains a fair share of jazzed up pop tunes that tends to identify the album as more of a pop album than a jazz recording. This is not to say that the music is not pleasant only that the audience which prefers straight ahead contemporary jazz may not appreciate the overreaching pop slant of this recording. ? Despite the lack of true jazz standards in the repertoire Linda Ciofalo as a vocalist is perhaps one of the very best singers around. Her voice and warm approach to the music in the end makes this album. The music moves rather slowly with in this listener?s humble opinion too many low to down-tempo tracks and not enough lively material to balance the album out.
