Annual Barbeque at Ballard Community Center
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Aug 31, 2007
This year I’ll be missing out but according to my calculations – today August 31st is not only the occasion of my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary but the annual summer barbeque at Ballard Community Center on NW 28th and 60th. Follow the sounds of the jazz music. In writing about the BCC this week in the Ballard News Tribune I realized it was that time of year again already and figured that blog readers need to know about the party as well. The Ballard Community Center has always been a second home for me and my daughter – including one February party that involved children in pajamas on the playground way way after dark. Jazz starts about 5:45 p… The Community Center I’m not usually in Ballard on the last Friday in August so until last year I wasn’t aware that I was missing a party at the end of my block. n the last Friday afternoon in August the Ballard Community Center hosts a neighborhood barbeque. Last summer I heard jazz music and followed it to the source at 6020 28th NW. Free hotdogs and ice cream a chance for the summer camp counselors to “dunk” their counselors an inflated jumping booth for little kids and live jazz. I shouldn’t have been surprised. There are always activities at the Ballard Community Center from the Daddy-Daughter Dance in February to the flashlight Easter Egg Hunt in April. n any given day there are classes in the pottery studio yoga in the big room basketball or volleyball in the gym Dandelion Dance or the after-school or summer camps that are always completely filled and spill out into the park.

Things to do
St. Petersburg Times – Aug 31, 2007
The antimarijuana film was originally financed by a church group and is reminiscent of those terrible educational awareness videos found throughout elementary schools nationwide. The musical exaggerates the madness that ensues when clean-cut kids try pot – "ne puff and you're hooked!" – and involves a trio of drug dealers who entice innocent teenagers to smoke "reefer" cigarettes. They lead the teens to a hysterical downfall featuring sex violence and evil jazz music. Presented by the MAD Theatre of Tampa the musical comedy is not suitable for younger audiences. Reefer Madness the Musical will debut Wednesday at the Ritz Theatre (formerly the Masquerade) 1503 E Seventh Ave. The play runs until Sept.

Gr? includes Alan Doherty (flutes whistles vocals percussion) Andrew Laking (double bass vocals guitar) Colin Farrell (fiddle whistle) Gerry Paul (guitars vocals) and Nicola Joyce (vocals bodhran). The group’s wide-ranging talent displayed across “Cloudy Day Navigation” should come as no surprise considering the strong skills of the individual members who make up the troupe. New Zealand native Laking has a wide-ranging background playing Irish and jazz music while flautist Doherty first gained worldwide fame as a lead soloist on Howard Shore’s “Lord of the Rings” soundtrack. Ireland natives Joyce and Paul and Manchester England’s Farrell all participated in thriving regional Irish music scenes before forming Gr? six years ago. An eclectic mix of performers including Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin Damien Dempsey Damien Rice and Bill Whelan have all utilized members from Gr?’s ranks. The group’s discography includes 2007′s “Cloudy Day Navigation” as well as the group’s 2004 debut “The Landing Step” and 2005′s “Endeavour. ” Fans of seminal Irish music artists such as Solas will be thrilled by Gr?’s musicianship and performance skills in concert.
