In 1997 Whalum jumped labels to sign with Warner Bros. His first solo album on Warner’s tab Colors was released that same year and perhaps more than any other album showed Whalum’s ability to synthesize music from a variety of sources to produce a fusion of pop jazz and R&B. The following year Gospel According to Jazz Chapter 1 exhibited his ability to return to the music of his childhood stylistically while also pursuing the kind of spiritual depth that has a long history in jazz echoing artists like John Coltrane in taking advantage of the saxophone’s unique expressive qualities. ” Nevertheless broadcasting was SiMan’s first passion. The man who once carried around a tape recorder as a child in an attempt to mimic people on television grew up to become a weatherman and news director for the NBC station in Macon Georgia and a videotape editor and field host for WXIA-TV 11 Alive in Atlanta. He began his long career in high school at a country radio station and went on to other formats such as Heavy Metal Gospel Top 40 Urban R&B and Jazz music. SiMan is wise to say the very least and knows a little bit about everything from keeping good credit to how Michael Vick should get his career back. In fact when broadcast students come to SiMan for pointers on how to attain success in the field he usually advises them not to go into it. “If I can talk you out of it [broadcasting] then this is not your passion and you don’t need to do it anyway” he laughs. However SiMan imparts two jewels of advice that not only benefit broadcasting majors but anyone in general trying to “make it” in any field of work: Jewel #1: Diversify.
