Looping has in recent times evolved into a musical form in its own right what with the works of minimalist composers like Terry Riley Steve Reich and Brian Eno and Robert Fripp of King Crimson and Guitar Craft fame. Schiefel however demonstrates the dynamism of the music with his loop machine in a manner hitherto unseen. “It was the piano that drew me into jazz” says Schiefel recounting his foray into jazz in his late teens… In addition to his solo performances Schiefel is also noted for his numerous collaborations: with the classical-inspired big band Thaerichen’s Tentett modern jazz with David Friedman Balkan music with the German-Bulgarian quintet Batoru and also as a guest artist for the Goethe Institute. It was as part of his Asia tour organized by the Institute when Schiefel recently performed in the city. So how do audiences across the world take to his kind of music? “It is a small stream within jazz music” he says. “Audiences are actually not that different from each other when it comes to experiencing new things. Some simply leave but most are willing to experiment. ” Schiefel claims that people often dub him as an alien. “I’m new and weird every new place I go to” he smiles.

Summerfest: Still smilin’ after 40 years

Running into forgotten friends and making new ones. Checking out the latest halter-top fashions. And listening to hours and hours of great music soaking up sun and suds. Music beer and a cool lake breeze on a sunny summer day – does it really get any better? Although I haven’t lived in Milwaukee for nearly three decades I’ve always timed my annual trek to visit family and friends in Brew City to coincide with Summerfest. Has it really been 40 years of Summerfest? It seems not so long ago I was just a 7-year-old kid holding my big sister’s hand as we wandered through some lame exhibits and activities that marked the beginnings of Summerfest. The festival was spread out over several locations the first couple of years and the highlight for me was rolling down the old hill in front of the War Memorial Center on the lakefront. It really wasn’t much of a festival… Lately it’s been known as the “world’s biggest music festival” and earned a spot in Guinness World Records to prove it. In the early years my mother would take me to Summerfest where we would listen to jazz at the old Miller Jazz asis. She was a big jazz fan from my parents’ days of running a jazz nightclub on Milwaukee’s south side and she would tell me stories about the local jazz musicians on the stage. I was too young to attend the infamous Sly and the Family Stone concert in 1970 but I remember walking by and seeing the mass of humanity waiting for the concert to begin. And I could only guess what were George Carlin’s infamous seven words that got him arrested in 1972. The 1973 Humble Pie concert was another riotous affair I had to miss due to my youth; my older brother however came home from Summerfest that night mysteriously with an ice cream scooper. Summerfest at that point was still mostly a daytime event for me.
