Hiawatha to Be Released on 6-CD Set

“There is a silent majority out there of people who are hungering after entertainment of a different form. “Maglaras 57 is a former opera singer who founded Two17 Records in Stamford Conn. He has produced recordings of alternative rock and jazz music as well as poetry. He began working on the Hiawatha project last year after reading the poem in its entirety and coming away impressed. The work 22 chapters in all is based on stories and legends of various North American Indian tribes. When Longfellow published Hiawatha in 1855 it was an immediate success. Some 50000 copies were sold and it was translated into French Italian German and other languages.

” The tenor saxophonist Todd Williams devised a strong succession of blues choruses on “Introspection. ” The trombonist Wycliffe Gordon delivered several rousing solos notably on an up-tempo gospel stomp called “Invocation. “That movement offered an almost literal appropriation of church music and served as a pinnacle of the concert. Gordon’s blaring testimony Mr. Marsalis offered his own fanning a bowler-hat mute over the bell of his horn. He sat on one note for a while before nudging the band up a step and then another echoing a heavenward climb.

Since then Michael who is adept at different genres of music — pop classical-inspired big band modern jazz or Balkan beats — has dazzled his fans both at home and abroad with an array of solo and band projects that have yielded a dozen albums over the past decade. Now this multifarious singer is all set to regale the Capital’s music connoisseurs at a Jazz Experimental Electronic Concert at Kamani Auditorium here on May 30. rganised by Max Mueller Bhavan Goethe-Institut the concert is on a first-come-first-served basis. Michael’s first work Invisible Loop (1997) was hailed as one of the most promising debut albums of the decade while his second release “I Don’t Belong” (2001) was a more introspective album. His latest solo album “Don’t Touch My Animals” which was released in September 2006 features songs about love and life in the big city.
