Gardner who did the arrangements for.

Jazz vocalist Inga Berzina comes to Poconos from Latvia with a song
Pocono Record – Apr 27, 2007
“After college Berzina went to Moscow to study at Gnesin Music Academy because there was a department of pop and jazz music. “”It wasn’t just for dancing for gigs for concerts but it was for joy” Berzina says. A lifetime student and teacher she says “When you play jazz the music becomes more complicated — not more primitive in its essence but it pulls you in like flowing sand. “Studying with Lawson meant traveling 1½ hours but Lawson says “Inga’s heart and beautiful spirit come through her music and when she scats I hear her children’s playfulness. “Currently working on a doctorate in music education at Latvian University Lawson sees how Berzina is appreciated “they love her the administration and the students. “Berzina says “It’s normal we have to love each other. “A grant enables her to travel and she has performed in many European countries including Estonia Lithuania Germany Finland Austria Spain and Poland with the top jazz instrumentalists of her country.

Music Review | ‘Epitaph’
New York Times – Apr 27, 2007
There were rough patches when the music was most full of incident: shifts or overlappings between melodic strains; parts skidding to a stop tempos picking up gradually constant cross-talking between extreme-register instruments. The trouble wasn’t so surprising in a band this big: two pianists two bassists (Christian McBride and Boris Kozlov) a drummer and two percussionists not to mention bassoon contrabass clarinet and tuba. But more to the point it wasn’t so surprising in music so unusual for jazz veering between blues language Ives-like polytonality and tone poems with fast phrases and vertiginous jumps in register made to challenge good musicians. The trumpeters Lew Soloff and Jack Walrath from the 1989 version of “Epitaph” were in the 31-piece band; so was the conductor Gunther Schuller who had an important role in shaping that full premiere. Some further reconstructive work has been done since then. The dark thorny “Inquisition” adapted from a piece in the original “Epitaph” called “Moods in Mambo” was newly woven in as well as another Mingus piece “This Subdues My Passion. ” And with few other changes from the 1989 version “Better Git Hit in Your Soul” was performed here with full orchestra whereas a sextet played it back then a complicated and occasionally brilliant piece of jazz repertory saw another day and became a little more venerable.

eJazzNews – Apr 27, 2007
The Federation of American Musicians Singers and Performing Artists (FAMSPA) just published the fourth volume ?SHWBIZ PINEERS BEST SINGERS MUSICIANS AND ENTERTAINERS FRM 1606 T THE PRESENT? of its encyclopedic series of 10 volumes on Jazz cabaret music entertainment and performing arts. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WAS AMERICA?S EARLIEST SNGWRITER With great interest I read the 3 previous volumes of the World Who?s Who in Jazz Cabaret Music and Entertainment. It took me a while to go through the 2200 pages of this massive work but I enjoyed it tremendously. De facto it is academic but also extremely fun and entertaining because on one side the author analyzes in depth the fabric roots origin of music and its pioneers from the 17th century to the present day and on another side he hits you with unknown bizarre stories lifestyles facts and gossip about stars and headliners that could and would change the way we conceive them or think they are who they are! For instance did you know that Benjamin Franklin was America?s earliest songwriter and lyricist? I did not know until I read about it in ?Showbiz Pioneers Best Singers Musicians and Entertainers from 1606 to The Present? volume IV of the World Who?s Who in Jazz Cabaret Music and Entertainment. According to the book ?in 1667 the English religious songs were largely replaced by ?The Bay Psalter? when it was officially and dearly adopted by Benjamin Franklin who began to write the first American songs and ballads. In that sense Franklin could be considered as the first American songwriter composer and lyricist as well as the first publisher of a book of American songs and music sheets.
